Hulls, Engines and Stabilisers: Why Some Yachts Ride Better Than Others
Two yachts of the same length can behave very differently at sea. The difference lies in technical details you can't see in a photograph: the shape of the hull, the propulsion system, the stabilisers. This guide explains them simply and shows how they translate into comfort, fuel use and style of use.
The hull: displacement, semi-displacement and planing
Displacement hulls move by pushing the water and are efficient at moderate speeds, with a smooth motion. Planing hulls, by contrast, rise onto the water as they gain speed, which allows high speeds at the cost of higher consumption. Between them sit semi-displacement hulls, a very common compromise in cruising motor yachts.
Another parameter is the hull's «V»: the deeper it is, the better it cuts through waves and the more comfortable the ride in a sea, at the expense of some static stability. The catamaran, with two hulls, offers plenty of stability and a very wide deck area.
Types of yacht in the fleet
Flybridge yachts, such as the Prestige 680 (BLUE M), the Sunseeker Manhattan 63 (Midnight Summer Dream) or the Absolute 62 Fly (EMILIA II), add an upper deck with helm and lounge area, and offer plenty of space for groups.
«Open» boats, such as the Fjord 52 (PETITCHET) or the Fjord 48 Open (BOMBON), have a large cockpit open to the sea and a design geared towards enjoying the outdoors. High-performance boats, like the Pershing 5X (Polar), prioritise speed and sporty design. And the Lagoon 500 is a roomy, stable catamaran, much appreciated at anchor.
Propulsion: shafts, pods, waterjets and outboards
Motor yachts can have inline shafts (the classic solution), sterndrive systems, pod drives (such as IPS), waterjets or outboard engines. Each has its advantages: pods improve manoeuvrability and consumption, waterjets allow shallow-draft operation, outboards simplify maintenance and free up interior space, and inline shafts are robust and well proven.

Stabilisers: less roll, more comfort
Stabilisers reduce the boat's roll. Fin stabilisers work while underway, countering the sideways motion, and some versions also work at zero speed. Gyro stabilisers, by contrast, rely on a flywheel and are very effective with the boat stopped or at anchor.
Their effect is especially valuable when anchoring for lunch: a cove with a bit of residual swell can be uncomfortable without them and very comfortable with them.
What makes a yacht more comfortable
Comfort depends mainly on length, beam, weight and hull shape. In general, a longer, heavier boat moves less in the same swell. Soundproofing, the layout of the spaces and headroom below deck also play a part.

Length, beam and draught: what they mean
Length overall is the boat's length, and it is the figure most often quoted. Beam is its maximum width, which determines interior space and stability. Draught is the depth the hull reaches below the waterline, and it limits how close to shore the boat can go. A wide boat is usually more stable and spacious; a shallow-draught one can anchor closer to the beach.

Systems that affect comfort
Beyond the hull and propulsion, some equipment shows in the experience: air conditioning and the generator, which determine comfort at anchor and noise levels; the bow thruster, which eases manoeuvres in port and when mooring to a buoy; and the soundproofing of the spaces, which makes the day on board more pleasant.

How to read a technical sheet before choosing
Each boat's sheet gives its length, passenger capacity, number of cabins and other data. To refine the choice, it is worth asking about the hull and propulsion type, whether stabilisers are fitted, the anchoring equipment and approximate consumption at cruising speed. These are details a good adviser knows and which make the difference between two apparently similar boats.
