How Much Fuel Does a Yacht Use, and How to Cruise Efficiently
One of the concepts that surprises people new to yachting is that fuel consumption does not rise in proportion to speed. Understanding why helps you plan the day, read a quote and cruise with less impact. This guide explains the technical principles and the practices a professional crew applies.
Why consumption isn't linear
A hull moving through water displaces a large amount of liquid, and as speed increases resistance grows more than proportionally. In displacement boats that resistance shoots up as they approach hull speed, which depends on waterline length. In planing boats there is a transition phase, the «hump», in which the engines work hard and the boat has not yet lifted onto the water.
The practical result is that cruising at a moderate speed is far cheaper per mile than running flat out, even if the trip takes a little longer. That is why we distinguish between consumption per hour, which rises sharply with speed, and consumption per mile, which is what really measures efficiency.
What raises it
Besides speed, the weight on board (fuel, water, luggage, equipment), the condition of the hull and propellers (fouling increases resistance), the boat's trim and sea and wind conditions all matter. Cruising into wind and waves burns more than cruising in calm seas or with a following sea.
Consumption also continues when the boat is stopped or at anchor: the generator, air conditioning and other equipment run on fuel, so managing them affects the day's total.
How an efficient crew cruises
A professional crew plans passages to use reasonable cruising speeds, avoids unnecessary acceleration and doesn't keep the engines running without need. When the plan allows, they anchor rather than wait with engines on, and they manage generator use.
Maintenance also matters: a clean hull and propellers in good condition save fuel on every mile. It's work done before the guest steps aboard and is rarely seen.
Why fuel is settled on actual consumption
On larger boats a day's consumption can vary considerably with the itinerary and speed, which is why it is common to settle it on actual consumption. It is consistent with the technical reality: a boat that barely cruises for a couple of hours doesn't burn the same as one covering a long route. We cover it in more detail in our price guide.
Environmental impact: less fuel, fewer emissions
Reducing consumption has a direct effect on emissions, noise and the wake the boat leaves in coves. That is why, beyond economy, efficient cruising is part of responsible behaviour: moderate speeds near the coast, smooth acceleration and well-thought-out routes.

What you can do as a guest
If you value efficiency, propose a realistic itinerary to your skipper: fewer miles at high speed and more time anchored in a quiet cove is usually better for both consumption and the experience. Matching boat size to the number of guests and avoiding unnecessary load also helps.
How a day's consumption is estimated
A day's consumption isn't calculated from a single figure but by adding up legs: hours cruising at each engine setting, hours manoeuvring and at anchor with the generator, and sea conditions. A day with a short outbound leg, a long stop and a relaxed return burns far less than one with several long legs at high speed, even if the total duration is the same.
That's why the itinerary is the heaviest factor: two eight-hour days can have very different consumption depending on how many hours are spent underway and at what speed. When planning with the guest, it's worth talking about the route before the boat.
Common myths
It's often assumed that going as slowly as possible is always the most efficient. That's not accurate: on a planing hull, the least efficient setting is usually the transition itself, when the boat hasn't yet planed and the engine works hard. The efficient approach is to avoid that point, cruising either below or above it.
Another myth is that more power always means more consumption. A well-sized boat working in its optimal range can be more efficient than a smaller one being pushed. What matters is how the power is used, not how much is available.
Technology and where the industry is heading
The boating industry is moving towards more efficient solutions: optimised hulls, cleaner engines, propulsion systems that improve performance and, at some yards, hybrid propulsion or alternative fuels. These are developing trends, and their adoption in charter yachts is still gradual, but they show the direction of the industry.
