The best time to sail in Mallorca: weather, sea and crowds, month by month
Sailing season in Mallorca runs from May to October, but not every month offers the same thing. If your travel dates are flexible, understanding what changes month by month helps you choose between more sunshine and more crowds, or a little more calm with an equally enjoyable sea.
May and June: the best balance
The water starts warming up (18°C in May, 22°C in June) and the days are already long and stable. The big advantage of these months is low crowds: popular coves like Es Trenc or Caló des Moro aren't packed yet, and finding a comfortable spot to anchor is far easier than in peak August.
Along with September, this is the window we usually recommend to anyone who can pick their dates freely.
July and August: peak heat, peak crowds
The water reaches its warmest (25-26°C) and the atmosphere is the liveliest of the year, with beach clubs in full swing and busy nightlife in the marinas. It's also when the most people are out sailing, so the best-known coves fill up fast — leaving early (before 10:30am) makes a real difference.
If your priority is a lively atmosphere and you don't mind sharing a cove with more boats, this remains the most reliable stretch weather-wise.
September and October: late summer, fewer people
The water stays warm (25°C in September, 22°C in October) because the sea holds onto summer heat, while tourist numbers have already dropped considerably compared to August. For many skippers, September is the best month of the year to sail in Mallorca — the sea is still perfect and the coves breathe again.
Off-season (November-April)
The water drops to 14-16°C, which makes swimming unappealing for most people, though sailing itself remains possible on good-weather days. It's the lowest-priced season, but not the kind of experience we usually recommend if your plan includes anchoring and swimming in a cove.
Our honest recommendation
If you can choose, May-June or September give you the best sea with the fewest crowds. If your holiday falls in July-August, that's fine too — just head out early and trust your skipper to find the quietest coves of the day.
